In May 2008, the keel was laid for the 31,200 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger VOX MÁXIMA, built by order of Van Oord. With a length of over 200 m, a width of 31 m and a cavity of 17.5 m this vessel belongs to the jumbo trailing suction hopper class which has only 12 vessels worldwide. The vessel has a dredging depth of up to 70 m.
The first large sections were built during a preparation period of more than one year. They were transported by pontoons to Kinderdijk, the Netherlands, where they were placed at the shipyard. The Vox Máxima comprises more than 200 sections. The three sections (nave to steerage) have, for example, a total length of 100 m, a width of 31 m and a cavity of 9.6 m. The main engines measuring each 10 x 5 x 5 m and a joint power of approximately 28 megawatt, are capable of supplying about 44,000 people with energy. This number of people is similar to the population of Ridderkerk council.
On 24 April 2009, the Vox Máxima was launched at Kinderdijk shipyard and christened by HRH Princess Máxima of the Netherlands. In November 2009, Vox Máxima left for ‘Europoort’ to complete the commissioning and sea trial. On 21 January 2010, the vessel was completed and handed over to Van Oord. On 22 January, the vessel left the ‘Prins Johan Frisohaven’ in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to be used for the ‘Maasvlakte 2 project’.
